The MP960 features the same impressive 3.5-inch color LCD screen, but the new iPod-style easy scroll wheel makes it quick and easy to navigate menus and preview on-screen images. The $599 price seems a bit high compared to other models, like the $299 Canon Pixma MP600 that we also reviewed this month, given that the main difference is the MP960’s addition of film scanning capabilities. You can scan documents up to letter size from the platen glass, and a backlight built into the lid lets you scan film. Film holders hold 12 negatives or 8 slides and store them neatly in the lid when not in use. You can preview images on screen and make simple edits like removing red-eye and cropping. Two media slots behind a door on the front panel accept most formats, but you’ll need a third-party USB adapter to read xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick Duo, and Mini SD Card formats.
“update-star” The Pixma MP960 offers two input sources: a cassette in the front and an automatic sheet feeder in the rear. You can switch between inputs using the Feed Switch button on the control panel. The front panel folds out to serve as an output tray. Like its predecessor, the Pixma MP960 has a built-in duplexer for automatic two-sided printing, including photo prints (for a photo album, for example). The glossy photographic prints were spectacular. Our judges praised the sharp details, smooth gradients, vibrant colors, and natural skin tones. However, our judges did notice some flaws in the MP960’s prints on plain paper. Text characters had fuzzy edges and the solid areas of large fonts were jerky. Our difficult line sample showed wide horizontal stripes and diagonal interference patterns in closely spaced blocks of lines.
