Its maximum resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi in colour1 is combined with Canon’s patented hybrid ink system. So you’ll have pigment black ink for sharp text and dye ink for beautiful photos up to 8.5″ x 11″, all in exceptional quality. The MP280 sticks to the basic all-in-one functions (print, copy, and scan). Its connectivity is limited to a wired USB connection to a computer, and it has no ports for printing (or scanning) from other sources: memory cards, thumb drives, or PictBridge-compliant cameras. As an all-in-one with a limited feature set, it’s definitely better suited for the home than the home office. Its 100-sheet paper capacity effectively limits its professional use to very light tasks in a home office or as a personal printer in a larger office.
“update-star” The speed of the Pixma MP280 is average. On a PC, plain text pages averaged 5.6 pages per minute and photos came out at 1.5 ppm. Its text speed was identical on a Mac, but the higher-resolution photo we used in this test understandably took longer. Scanning and copying were slower than average. Where the Pixma MP280 really shines is in the quality of its output. With the default settings on plain paper, the text looked very black and very soft, but the photos looked too orange; the effect disappeared when we switched to Canon photo paper. Color copies were accurate and vivid. There’s no question that the Pixma MP280 is designed for low-volume use. It doesn’t have an automatic document feeder for the scanner or an automatic duplex for the printer, and it only has a single 100-sheet vertical paper feeder at the rear.
