Elegant, compact, and easy to use, it offers superior-quality prints. Canon’s PIXMA MG6420 looks a bit like a mid-model upgrade. This is a home inkjet all-in-one, aimed more at photo enthusiasts or students than someone running a home business. It’s a five-ink printer using pigment black ink along with its photo black counterpart, so prints on plain paper can use the faster-drying formula. Canon uses a slightly chunkier black-box design, with a 75mm LCD mounted on its low-angle control panel, the machine looks sleek and smart. The flatbed’s lid has a nice dotted texture and the entire control panel lifts up and swings back like a Thunderbird, to reveal the five ink cartridges located in the scanner head.
“update-star” The Pixma range has always been stylish, but it seems that the beauty of the MG6420 comes at the expense of practicality. Access to the print heads and ink cartridges is via a narrow slot accessed by lifting the entire control panel section up; that’s nice, but access is limited so it can be difficult to properly line up the cartridges in the back. While we had the same review of the outgoing MG6320, we did like the handy touchscreen system on this model. For the MG6250, Canon has installed a screen and directional button controls. It’s a little less fancy and intuitive than the previous model’s touchscreen, but it’s reasonably functional, if inconsistent at times. Paper handling is reduced to the two pull-out trays, the first being the front panel of the printer. Holds up to 100 sheets of plain paper or photo paper; there is no separate photo tray. Paper is delivered to a second tray but is also supported by a pivoting paper stop on the lower tray. It feels a bit thrown together and gives the printer a great overall footprint.
