Although it is a four-color printer, it actually requires five separate ink cartridges, which include dye- and pigment-based black ink. The translucent tint creates rich tones on photo paper, while the pigment-based ink is designed to sink into standard paper and dry quickly to create crisp, smear-free text. Like the more expensive iP4600, this printer has a rear paper tray that can accept standard and photo paper and a front-loading cartridge. The latter can hold up to 150 standard A4-size sheets and has a protective cover to prevent dust from entering.

Unfortunately, the company hasn’t extended this sobriety to its line of single-function printers, where it still cites draft print speeds of 26ppm for black and 17ppm for color. In normal use, printing in the default print mode, we found black text print speeds to range from 4.4ppm on a 5-page document to 6ppm on a 20-page document. This is less than a quarter of the listed roughing speed and is due, in part, to long processing times before starting a job. Throughout our tests, we had to wait between 20 and 26 seconds before the paper started moving to print.
